Here is a little something that didn't fit in the WORK IT chapter in my new book Cherry Bomb: The Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Better Flirt, a Tougher Chick, and a Hotter Girlfriend, and to Living Life Like a Rock Star:

How to Look Richer Than You Are: Splurge on at least one of the following items and then wear it when you need to show off: a decent watch, a designer handbag, a sharp trench coat, a great pair of pumps or boots. Wearing black and hiding your tags helps too because it’s hard to tell if those black skinny jeans you’re wearing cost $40 at Target or $250 at your favorite boutique. If someone calls you out on what you’re wearing, just tell him or her, “Oh. This? It’s vintage. I don’t know what it is.” I won’t name names, but as a journalist, I’ve covered red carpet events where I’ve had to ask, “Who are you wearing?” And one starlet replied, “Vintage,” when I knew damn well I saw that dress in the window of H&M. Another telltale sign? The frayed bits of fabric on the back of the garment near the neck, where she had obviously cut out the tag.

How to Look Thinner: It’s been said before, but that’s because it works – darker colors, vertical lines, and monochromatic looks make one look just a wee bit smaller than one is. Also, flatter fabrics flatter the most. That mean stay away from too much ruching in a top or dress, or any puffy or quilted looks. You can also look thinner by belting your jacket, blazer, top, dress, or sweater at your smallest point – for some it’s right under the boobs. For others it can be right at the waist or just above the waist. If you have a little bit of a belly bulge to hide, wear a few cool, long, low-hanging rock and roll scarves.

How to Look Taller: Aside from the obvious – wear high heels -- there are actually other ways to look taller than you are. If you’re going bare legged, wear a nude colored high heel. Likewise, if you’re wearing black pants or a black skirt or dress, pair it with black tights and black shoes. The monochromatic look elongates your body. A high ponytail, Brigitte Bardot half-up/half-down hairdo, or a stylish hat can also give you an added extra inch on the top of your head.
